Healthy Eating Adds Up

A nutrition education and cooking program
for adults with developmental disabilities

- learning to take care of myself is important

Welcome! Healthy Eating Adds Up™ was developed with input from and involvement of individuals with developmental disabilities. The program materials have been developed by Chwen Johnson, a Registered Dietitian, to help staff in developmental services agencies to teach basic healthy eating concepts and simple food preparation skills to the individuals they support. The staff follows a structured program outline that builds the confidence of participants to make and prepare healthy food choices on their own.

The goals of the program are to improve the prospects of group participants for independent living and to reduce their risk for chronic disease. By adopting unique instructional procedures and incorporating fun and safe classroom and kitchen activities, this program is sure to appeal to its target audience.
